The Curse of the Street Performer

One of the most annoying and frustrating aspects of street performing is having to compete with other very loud performers and it happens everywhere including Thailand which is synonymous for it’s respectful culture of not raising ones voice or acting in an aggressive manner in public.

However when it comes to street performing there are no holds barred for the use of amplifiers. And so it came to pass that last night at the Three King’s Monument in Chiang Mai I had to contend with some self-righteous “Born Again Christians” who set up shop right opposite me with a 7 piece band, choir, dancing girls and 2 huge 15,000 megawatt speaker stacks.

My latest addition to my show, a very compact and portable rechargeable bluetooth speaker was totally drowned out not to mention my still very strong voice. So bloody annoying. I managed to pull off one show during the apocalypse but decided to wait until they finished before continuing. My other alternative was to move to another pitch but this one in the square really is the best with a lot of space for the audience and normally is fairly quiet. Still haven’t counted the money!
